THE ART OF WRITING SERIES

General Advice For Writers

THIS MONTH'S ARTICLE

Lights, Camera, Action

Time was when all you had to do to write an action scene was to kill someone about every three pages.  The problem with this is that VIOLENCE does not equate to ACTION.   Action scenes are aimed directly at the readers' pituitary gland and the ability to stimulate that particular part of the body is an art form.  If your last action scene went off like a wet firecracker, you may want to study up on the subject!

Predicting the Future

The track record for science fiction writers predicting the future is amazingly bad in both directions.  On one end of the scale are the common, everyday things we take for granted that no science fiction writer predicted.  I speak, of course, of the personal computer.  On the other are all of the wondrous things that every science fiction writer predicted which did not come to pass, such as the flying car.  If you are in the business of science fiction writing because you think it is your job to predict the future, you REALLY need to read this article..
